Personal Video Habits
Like many others today I receive most of my content via streaming service. Cable and satellite are becoming less appealing due to high prices and limited selection. With streaming services it allows you to facilitate video for multiple devices for the same price. Often times satellite makes you pay extra per box but generally even with Netflix families can get away with only using the basic plan since everyone would likely not all be watching separate shows on separate devices at once.
Correlation between age and rising streaming service usage
As someone in college it only makes sense that I would go strictly streaming. This allows me to bring my content with me back and forth from home to my dorm. The flexibility and price are appealing. Satellite users spend and average of 85 to 100 dollars a month with some packages topping out at 150 or more, which can come out to well over 1000+ dollars a year. A list of all major streaming services together cost only $448.81 a year. Even with Internet service fees (which you would likely already have) streaming is the cheaper option by far. I personally subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney+. The great part is that my Xbox One houses all these apps and more.
Apparently Netflix still reigns supreme as far as digital streaming but a more updated graphic would show Disney+ as a hot new contender. One thing that makes these streaming services desirable to me personally is their strong library of original and exclusive content. Whether it be Netflix's new hit The Witcher, Disney+'s The Mandalorian, or even Hulu's Runaways. The Witcher is a take on a video game/book series that has been widely popular for many years, it follows Geralt, a monster slayer who has been magically augmented to be the perfect hunter. The Mandalorian takes place in canon in the Starwars universe, it's about a bounty hunter of immense skill that is tasked with bringing in a child with special abilities. Mando quickly realizes he must protect the child at all costs. Runaway's is based off of a Marvel comic book and follows a group of young teens who find out their parents are part of a cult and they have to use their individual skills and powers to stop them. These services are smart to tap into fandoms. These are examples of four of the biggest. Video games, fantasy novels, Star Wars (sci-fi), and superheros. I could get into the breakdown on how every fandom is getting their content but I'd be writing for the next three days. There are a vast number of television niches that can make obscene amounts of money if properly tapped.
We watch a ton of online video in the lobby of our dorm and in my room. Generally we watch meme compilations or funny videos. Our shared love of Star Wars led us down a wormhole of parody videos of the infamous prequel movies. My roommate generally only watches Youtube in our room and his choice of poison is FilthyFrank and Danny Duncan. I can't think of a Frank or Danny video that's even remotely appropriate enough to link to this blog so if you really want to watch some of his work I'll let you search it yourself. When we eat in the lobby we often watch Rhett and Link's program Good Mythical Morning. They do a variety of odd segments but our favorites are the one's in which they try different food and guess where it's from called Where in The World. As far as myself personally, I loosely maintain a Youtube channel but my content isn't consistent to say the least. We also watch a lot of sports, it's generally football but if it were up to me I'd have the NBA on screen constantly. I personally like to watch the Philadelphia 76ers. Oddly enough at certain times we end up with various cartoons on the TV. If we think of some show from our childhood that one of our friends haven't seen we're obligated to show them an episode or two.
Lastly I'll just end with a list of must watch shows from yours truly. In addition to the three shows mentioned above I would also recommend The Grand Tour (Amazon Prime original), a humorous automotive adventure following Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May as they wreak havoc in a wide variety of vehicles.
Next is a travel show with some famous faces called Better Late Than Never (now on Hulu). First a network show it had made it's way onto streaming services for you to enjoy Terry Bradshaw and company travel the world at an "experienced age". It's a hilarious and often heartwarming take on getting older.
If you're a superhero fan my last pick is for you, Gerard Way (yes THAT Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance) has a show adapted from his comic book Umbrella Academy (Netflix original). It has a dark but whimsical feel and is exactly what one would expect from the leader of the Black Parade. With another season on the way this year it's the perfect time to catch up and prepare yourself for what promises to be another quality story.
