Advertising Analysis

In the digital age streaming dominates a good majority of household devices across the U.S. and the entire world. One thing that has remained constant from cable, to satellite, to streaming services is the use of abundant advertisement. The way in which the advertisements make their way into our home has evolved. Hulu is one of the biggest names in streaming and has a plethora of various adverts. Hulu has become increasingly popular in the last few years and many faithful cable customers are ditching their expensive bundles for the more affordable Hulu. How are they winning people over?

28.5 billion people use Hulu and 2.7 users have the Hulu package which includes live TV. Hulu uses their financial heft to place ads in premium slots. One example is their host of Superbowl ads . Featuring various celebrities such as Will Arnett the comical advertisements show that Hulu has more to offer than some other streaming services, they also offer packages with live TV. Most of the ads have a strange semi-comedic absurdest theme not unlike Geico comericals. I personally enjoy wacky advertising, in my opinion if it sparks conversation then it is effective. Many of Hulu's ads have sparked conversation, even if it was just people trying to figure out exactly what was going on in said commercials. In addition to prime time television spots Hulu often assaults YouTube users with ads that you often can't skip about shows like their new series High Fidelity. While I love Zoe Kravitz dearly, I think they're barking up the wrong tree here so to speak. This leads me to believe that instead of using YouTube's algorithms to determine the perfect person to spring these ads on, Hulu tries for as much of a spread as possible. Shotguns are often very effective, even if they're metaphorical, digital, and loaded with a ton of ads.

In case you haven't heard......*cannons fire, confetti pops, EDM blares* HULU HAS LIVE SPORTS. This has been one of Hulu's biggest campaigns. They are trying to profit off of giving access to major sporting events without a cable or satellite subscription. The spokesmen for Hulu with live sports are major professional athletes such as Joel Embiid (Go Sixers!) and Tom Brady and are dubbed the "Hulu Sellouts" At $54.99 a month Hulu with live TV, including sports, is much cheaper than most Television services. One catch with this ad is that Hulu doesn't mention that with the upgrade to live TV your standard Hulu becomes ad-supported. This brings up another point, most products advertised on Hulu in turn become advertisement for the the service itself. In a way companies are paying to advertise themselves on Hulu and in a way advertise Hulu itself by association.
